Faithful men

“I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.” Psalm 37:25

Bishop Henry Luke Orombi’s bible devotions have made rounds on WhatsApp. With simplicity he delves into scripture and expounds the Word of God.

Isaiah 43: 1 – 5 “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…”

With calm confidence, familiar with what he speaks, he says, “That is our God! …He is our defender – may He defend you and your family. He is our protector – may He protect you.”
One listens and feels the blessing of God shower down from the mouth of a humble and faithful servant who testifies to these truths.

Men come with words and fervor, they fizzle out just as quickly. Faithful men remain, truth remains. God’s word fulfills the purpose of changing hearts and lives – the servant a mere vessel.

Over 3 decades I have known of Bishop Orombi. The wealth of the Word stored in his heart and the love with which he shares it creates a spiritual cover, an assurance that what he speaks is real, tested and found true. A comfort to the children of God.

Reverend Canon Dr. John Ssenyonyi speaks God’s Word with depth and understanding. Over 25 years ago in the Conference center, he shared his love story to an audience of young boys and girls on holiday from school. His courtship with his wife Ruth inspired young people to be friends first and to save sexual intimacy for marriage. “It is God’s design” He said. Now, with grey hair – visibly older, his wife by his side, he continues to profess the faith, to share about the man named Jesus.

I’m reminded of Reverend Canon Ernest Nshakira (God rest his soul). I never met a man so in love with God. As he flipped through his tattered bible in search of a scripture, I saw a man dependent on God’s word like oxygen. His fingers run over memorized scripture and yet his heart skipped a beat as though he was reading these truths for the first time.

These men share a friendship with God that stands the test of time. As grey hair crowns their heads, they hold on to the one truth – God is our firm foundation.

“While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyes shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See Thee on Thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee.”

May we find and believe these truths for ourselves.
